Leading Minds for Leading Issues ™
Global Society, focused on global media, is the subject of one of SocialPioneers "New Cosmopolitan" workstreams for 2010 to 2011. The global reach of the media provides news, captures events, broadcasts entertainment, filters information, promotes ideologies - all in real-time joining up the whole globe - and impacts, for good and bad, on our understandings and views of our neighbours and our world. The Leading Issue: what is the influence of the media on cosmopolitanisation and how can it be improved?
The manifestations of globalisation - the mass movements of people, products and power, and the increasing connections and interdependencies from community to community - are magnified by the interpretations and treatment from the global media. Immigration, racial tensions, ethnic conflicts, cultural stereotyping, nationalism and exclusive solidarities are some of the subjects where the media can amplify fears and so generate divisions based on difference or diminish fears and so advance inter-cultural relationships within the cosmopolitan diversity.
The media potentially plays a powerful role in influencing the direction and pace of travel towards cosmopolitanisation with either more harmony or more conflict as consequences.
The Leading Minds
SocialPioneers is sponsoring a Global Society Navigator Forum with the objectives to:-
- Identify where and how media communications relate to the main sensitivities and concerns generated by globalisation and most felt by local communities - the media cosmopolitan framework
- Interpret current research evidencing how media influences attitudes and behaviours within the context of the media cosmopolitan framework
- Propose a method of assessing the cosmopolitan rating of individual media communications
- Propose how lessons - positive and negative - can be captured and disseminated to media leaders in Europe
- Identify collaborators to help in successful implementation and evolution of the Global Society media programme
- Report on the implications of findings for public service communications and stakeholder strategies
The Navigator Forum posts subjects for discussion and consultation on SocialPioneers' website. If you would like to become involved please regularly visit the Conversations section and send your details on how you wish to participate by contacting us.
